Being yourself,… I mean ‘truly’ being yourself is often a challenge! As babies, we start growing up, and gradually learn how to behave, what to say, what to think, in brief, we are taught to conform to the societal norms of our environment. We learn many good things, and at the same time, feel the need to abide by group pressure.

I’m convinced that while I should acknowledge and accept moral values for my own benefit and for that of society and the wider world, being myself is primordial to my existence!

True to yourself

Being true to yourself is important. When you take decisions, especially big ones, these are bound to impact your future. Being your true self gives you the right state of mind to take the right decisions.

Set your goals

When you are true to yourself, you are likely to set the right goals for yourself. This in turn will make you work towards achieving things that you cherish or are at least important, resulting in longer-term benefits, compared to short-term gains. This applies to various aspects of your life.

True success

When you set your true goals, and work whole heatedly towards achieving things you really believe in, then the fruits of success are yours! But, when you do things just because others are doing them, and you reach these goals, then you haven’t achieved what you value the most.

Real happiness

Real happiness comes when you recognise your true dreams and put time and energy, working towards realizing them. If you work towards achieving things that you don’t believe in, then your happiness is likely to be either short-term or fake.

Genuine relationships

Being yourself, you spend time and give due value to the people who you really love and who return back your love, those who you trust and respect mutually, and so on.

In doing so, you are likely to find yourself in the best relationships (since ideal ones may not even exist at all).

No regrets

At the end of your lifetime, when you think back of your past achievements, successes, realized dreams, lessons learnt from failures, you could find little or no regrets.

Time passes and never comes back! Be yourself, be true to yourself, assertive when needed, stick up for yourself while others laugh at you, or maybe just ignore them.

Take constructive criticism positively, to help you improve when needed. Provide advice and support to others, who may benefit from it, when possible.

Quotes

”I gave up my struggle with perfection a long time ago. That is a concept I don’t find very interesting anymore. Everyone just wants to look good in the photographs. I think that is where some of the pressure comes from. Be happy. Be yourself, the day is about a lot more.” – Anne Hathaway, as on Brainy Quote.

“It sounds so simple, but if you just be yourself, you’re different than anyone else.” – Tony Bennett, as on Brainy Quote.

“As actors, we are always playing other characters. It’s so exhausting and time consuming to figure them out, so when you get the time to be yourself, you should take it.” – Alia Bhatt, as on Brainy Quote.

Remember that the ones who shine out, are the ones who aren’t similar to others? Are you keen about being yourself? Please share your thoughts. Thank you!

  1. We can’t please everyone and we shouldn’t die trying either. I used to be like everybody else, but then who’s going to play my part? I realize each has his role to play and each role is important. Thank you for the reminder Sharvi.
