Haven’t you gone through times when there was a competition about good looks, who’s the coolest or who’s the most popular at high school? While this is often part of teenage and university years, such things do happen even later on in life, right? As far as physique is concerned, the pressure can be felt at any age and by everyone, even though it does tend to decrease, later on in life! How do you deal with it?

The term ‘body image’ is defined as ‘The subjective picture or mental image of one’s own body’, by the Oxford Dictionaries. While I do support taking care of myself holistically, being well-groomed, happy and enjoying life wholeheartedly, the purpose of my blog post is to focus on how not to give in to undue pressure!

These are 7 tips that help in tackling the issue:

1. Set goals

Set goals for boosting a positive body image. This includes how you approach and develop the right attitude of loving yourself for who you are while making efforts to build a better body image.

2. Prioritize your health

Fitness exercise and a proper diet is indeed key to having a nice-looking body. However, focus on your health primarily, and in the process, you’ll also remain fit and shapely! Working towards a healthy weight will make you look and feel good, with long-term benefits.

3. Be poised

Practice being confident, and it will become your habit! Dress up right for your natural body shape, walk into the room confidently, make eye contact when you talk to people, and so on… Relax and enjoy, live in the moment!

4. Social media

You may have to take a temporary break from social media if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes the pressure may be coming from what you see or what others are saying online.

5. Circle of support

Having help and support from your family/friends could do much in assisting you. Talk about your doubts and apprehensions to a close one and ask for an unbiased opinion. For example, when trying out new styles of clothing, ask your best friend if your new dress or shirt suits you, before going out. Should you pair it off with different shoes? Should you wear something else instead?

6. Daily journaling

Practice self-care and self-love. This is an important aspect of body confidence. Keep a journal and express gratitude. Documenting your progress and examining your notes, will help you in better understanding yourself. You’ll also be able to take calculated actions.

7. Seek professional help

While my blog only serves as a means for information, in case of need, do consult a professional in the field.

To sum up, body confidence is about feeling great, the way you are. While you make efforts to maintain good health, feeling and looking gorgeous (or handsome, for my male readers) comes naturally and from within! Would you like to share your tips? Please do so. Thank you!

  1. This was something very different and yet perfectly related to. The choice of words and metaphors is wonderful and makes everything seem so realistic. The way how women in this society are treated and grief-stricken is completely and beautifully portrayed. I could feel my eyes moisten while reading some lines. What a masterpiece!! Kudos to you!!

    You are welcome

  3. Very good advice. I think things were easier when I was young as we didn’t have people to compare ourselves with from the media. True there were still our fellow school pupils and some nasty things said but the pressure wasn’t there to make oneself ‘perfect’. As we age, we realise how unimportant a lot of it is, but when young it’s very hard.

  4. I find myself taking a beak from social media a few times a year. Unfortunately it’s too easy to compare yourself to others and that’s never healthy.

  5. This is a great post and thank you for sharing this with us. I often found myself comparing with celebrities but also with friends on social media and I feel bad. But I find it useful to type “celebrities with cellulite” “with no makeup” etc hehehe then I feel much more confident. Self-love is really important in order to feel good and live the best life we all deserve!

  6. I’m so glad you mentioned “social media” as a way to be more confident. I personally find myself comparing myself to others way too much. Lately I’ve been learning to love myself more for who I am.
