Do you believe in your dreams? Or do you prefer living your life based on what’s generally expected of you? Everyone has dreams, but only some of us work towards truly realizing them. How do you go about planning for and living your dreams?

I blog about life tips (among other topics) to make your daily life easier! In this post, I’ll share with you, how you can be clear about your dreams and work towards them:

1. Be realistic

First of all, when I say “realize your dreams”, I want to be clear that while you should set yourself high-level goals, as a human being, you can’t make a fish fly and a bird swim! You also have to be ready to work towards making things happen for real (don’t worry it’s fun as well!). Now, let’s dive into it…

2. Be yourself

Being your true self is primordial! We all live in societies that set norms about what is expected of us. Respecting the law is one of the things that you, of course, must abide by. However, you decide to live the life that you truly intend to!

3. Life purpose

What do you want to achieve in life? Knowing your ‘why’ or ‘raison d’être’ is key to living your dreams. If you’re not sure about what you truly want to achieve, then you’re likely to take up multiple projects and leave them after a while, without having the desired result!

‘Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.’ – Kevyn Aucoin

4. Set goals

Set the right goals for yourself! Be clear about what you want to achieve. Use a goal-setting method that suits you best. A popular one is the SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound) technique. Review your set goals regularly to keep them relevant and make changes if necessary.

5. Action plan

Have an action plan and track your progress. If you’re setting life goals for yourself, then you can have an informal approach (for example, monitor your morning routine, among other things), by keeping a journal. When used for professional reasons, you could even benefit from available statistics on your performance (from work), to track and evaluate your progress.

6. Key skills

Having set goals to realize your dreams, you may find that you need to learn new skills. These are things that will support you in your passionate quest! Wouldn’t learning skills that you know are meaningful to your life purpose, be a sheer pleasure?

7. True motivation

When you work towards achieving your true dreams, as compared to being in the ‘rat race’, you find yourself really motivated. You’re not doing things just to show people, or have a fake interest in what you do. When you think of your vision, you know it’s genuinely yours!

8. Affirmations

If you have doubts about or hesitate in going for your dreams, then work on eliminating them. Use affirmations to support you in believing in yourself… Yes, you can do it!

9. Innate talent

Listen to your dreams, and you’ll become aware of untapped talents. You may not be born in an environment where you’re encouraged to spend time singing, playing music, or more. But if you listen to your heart, you’ll develop your innate talents. Even if you don’t aim at becoming a professional in the field, having a hobby is a great way to relax and unwind!

‘When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, “I used everything you gave me”.’ – Erma Bombeck

10. Self-esteem

When you lead the life that you intend to, your self-respect goes up. Self-esteem is important… You can then, enjoy your life (in the real sense)!

Conclusion

Plan for and truly live your dreams! Even if you don’t achieve 100% of what you want to, you’ll still be much better off than being in the fake ‘rat race’. What are your views? Would you like to share your tips/experience? Please do so. Thank you!!

  1. Yes!!! Love everything about this post. I think being realistic with one’s goals is so important and sometimes overlooked which can lead to disappointment. It’s important to dream big but understand what limitations you must overcome first.

  2. I agree with all of the above, but #7 touched me the most because I know it is true. If you are passionate about something, you can’t help but be motivated!

  3. I am definitely a planner and like to plan out my life. I am currently working on a new goal set and it’s been a frustrating thing trying to figure out how to make it function properly!

  4. For me, having a plan and a clear path to a goal/dream is what makes it a reality. I need to see milestone and reach for those. My husband and I wrote down our personal and professional goals/dreams and sit together once a month to see where we are each at. It gives us both accountability and motivation.

  5. I seriously need to start taking and fulfilling goals, seriously. Sometimes I feel like I’m just lost and wandering because I don’t have a plan for anything other than today. I’m going to print out your tips and see if I can’t turn that around.
