JOMO, short for ‘joy of missing out’ is the opposite of FOMO, ‘fear of missing out’. Are you more of a JOMO or FOMO person? Read my blog post to see how embracing joy instead of fear of missing out is what you deserve, as far as social media is concerned.

Secondly, in times of social distancing and the lockdown in many countries (at the time of writing this blog post), do take all the necessary precautions and stay safe!
While social media is a necessity in our daily lives, making careful use of it is often essential for wellness and well-being. This blog post will focus on JOMO. If you want to read about FOMO, do take a look at my older blog post, by viewing How to avoid FOMO joyfully in life.
This is how the 2 terms are defined:
JOMO – ‘Pleasure derived from living quietly or independently without feeling anxious that one is missing out on exciting or interesting events that may be happening elsewhere. Compare with FOMO’ – as defined on Lexico
FOMO – ‘Anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on social media’ – as on Lexico
During the current lockdown in many countries (at the time of writing), large social gatherings are normally prohibited for reasons of safety through social distancing. This can reinforce the time spent on social media, as people tend to feel more lonely than usual.
Social media is generally wonderful, keeping people in touch with loved ones, staying updated about trends, the news, and much more. However, it can also turn into a form of addiction and potentially cause FOMO.
Digital detox and control of time spent online are often essential for people to relax and recharge. Have you asked yourself how much time you spend on social media daily? Do you avoid looking at your screen before bedtime? Do you enjoy family time, without having to check your phone too often?
Here are 8 reasons you deserve JOMO
1. Live in the moment
Relish the present moment, living in the moment, enjoy the simple joys of life that you already have.
2. Think independently
JOMO aligns well with the positive attitude of not being under pressure to ‘follow the herd’, being like the others just to fit in. You know your true identity and fully embrace who you are.
3. No comparisons
Leave behind societal pressure and norms that tell you what you should be doing. Stop comparing yourself to others. Everyone’s unique and the beauty of it is being original… genuinely and naturally yourself.
4. Invest time meaningfully
Invest your precious and scarce time healthily, doing activities that you choose for yourself. Why not work on your set life goals, take an online course for personal growth, or talk to a close one?
5. Value sincerity
With JOMO you can focus on the right people in your life. Value sincerity and trust over hypocrisy and fake friends.
6. Digital detox
Put your phone away from time to time, meditate, unwind, replenish, and feel recharged. You’re in great shape for better productivity!
Dedicate time regularly for your hobbies.
8. Affirm yourself
You choose your priorities, and not the other way round.
Choose joy over fear… and be grateful for the sincere people in your life.
To sum up, choose JOMO over FOMO. The joy of missing out is what you deserve in life. It depends on you to take the right type of action at the right time. Would you like to share your experience? If you know someone who needs such tips, do share my blog post. Thank you!!
