Emotional intelligence (EI) is often linked to being happy and even successful.  It supports you in diverse ways, throughout your life. Let’s see how emotional intelligence brings benefits in different spheres of life.

Disclaimer: My blog is to be used for general information and motivational purposes. I share things that I’ve learnt and experienced.  In case of need, do seek help from a professional in the relevant field.

As a self-improvement blogger (and not an EI specialist), my post isn’t intended to detail the technical or theoretical aspects of the topic. I’ll rather blog about the practical side and benefits that can be easily seen in daily life.

‘Emotional intelligence (EI), emotional leadership (EL), emotional quotient (EQ) and emotional intelligence quotient (EIQ), is the capability of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour, and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one’s goal(s).[1][2]’  – as per an article on Wikipedia

See 8 ways emotional intelligence enhances your life:

1. Personally

Let’s start with yourself as a person.  Being able to understand your feelings and emotions are key to mindful behaviour.  You can take calculated actions and avoid what’s regretful and irreparable.  Often, things said and actions that are taken without a second thought could be a great blunder!

2. At home

A home is a vital place in life!  The people who live there… your family, spouse, close friend, or perhaps even your flatmate are people you’re likely to be seeing every day.  Your household is therefore important.  The way you talk can make or break relationships.

3. In couples

As a married couple or still living together, you and your spouse or girl/boyfriend share life together.  You even grow together through the ups and downs, strengthening the bond between you.  Relationships are fragile, so value each other and use EI for the better.

4. With children

Children learn from others, especially their parents.  They tend to imitate what they see around them.  Always think twice and speak mindfully, as your kids are learning from you.

5. At work

If you’re employed, then people such as your boss, colleagues, clients and so on are crucial key players in the workplace.  Your career may be one of your top priorities and knowing how to maintain a collaborative attitude can help foster a pleasant work environment to benefit your whole team.

6. In business

As a self-employed, freelancer, blogger, or businessman/woman running your own company, the contacts you build can be handy.  However, the respect and trust that you gain from your clients and employees may be one of the best things!  Be thoughtful, give others your undivided attention at meetings, be mindful when you speak… anger and arrogance can destroy what you’ve built through the years.

7. In social circles

You may be a party animal (outside of the COVID-19 lockdown period… at the time of writing this post), a fervent user of social media channels, a great professional networker, or perhaps prefer other types of social activities.  To make a lasting and favourable impact on other people’s minds, you must be liked and remembered.  Good emotional intelligence supports you all the way.

8. Success in life

Success means different things to different people, as we all define it for ourselves.  Your life purpose guides you toward what you want to achieve.  However, we cannot live, each in our different worlds all the time.  Communication, teamwork, and collaboration are inevitable and contribute to success.

Emotional intelligence skills

Some people tend to be more gifted than others.  Fortunately, we can all enhance EI as a skill if we desire it.  If you feel that you need to improve upon it, then you can learn proven methods by taking courses and most importantly, putting them into practice in daily life.  Always keep getting better than what you were yesterday!

Emotional intelligence is indeed your true ally.  It helps you intrinsically, extrinsically, and in different aspects of life.  Luckily, we can all choose to make efforts and improve upon it.  Would you like to share your thoughts and experience by commenting below?
