‘Lifelong learning is the “ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated” pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons. Therefore, it not only enhances social inclusion, active citizenship, and personal development, but also self-sustainability, as well as competitiveness and employability.’ – Wikipedia
Here are 10 benefits of lifelong learning, that I strongly support:
1. Always improve yourself
With the motivation to always grow your knowledge, you’ll benefit from ongoing learning by always improving. No matter how good you already are at things, you’ll get even better… Practice, and always keep on being better than what you were yesterday.
2. Remain updated
Stay in touch with your field or industry, and remain updated about key developments. It’s crucial in taking calculated decisions. When you have the relevant knowledge, you can make the most of it to achieve success.
3. New skills
Find what skills are missing and learn to build new ones. No matter how professional and experienced someone may be, there will be a time when he/she will have to learn new ways of doing things. For example, in technology, change is happening all the time.
4. Job retention
Lifelong learning helps with job retention. Many factors may determine employment, those who are always learning and improving, giving results in their workplace are likely to be appreciated. On the other hand, during times such as the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, a fall in economic activity can cause unemployment for reasons, other than employee performance.
When you’re knowledgeable, it boosts your self-confidence. You can speak your mind without fear or doubts. Of course, no one knows everything, so it’s wise to remain down-to-earth. This brings us back to why we should always keep learning, as learning never ends!
6. Exercise your brain
Ongoing learning and activities such as trivia games help exercise the brain. Doing so can help you in diverse ways. As we age, we tend to forget things, compared to when we were younger.
7. Enjoy brain games
Enjoy yourself learning and participating in games such as puzzles, crosswords, and more. Get into a friendly healthy competition challenge. Doing so is a delightful way to remain interested in learning more.
8. Take informed risks
When you learn all the time, you have much information. This supports you in taking calculated risks and informed decisions. The one who lacks knowledge may hesitate, while others are already taking action.
9. Personal growth
Lifelong learning not only benefits your professional but also your personal life… it has a positive impact on every aspect of your life. What you learn will be handy on many occasions. You may choose to take academic, formal, informal, online courses, read self-help books, listen to podcasts, and more.
You define your success and set your own life goals. Success, therefore, means different things to different people. However, we all benefit from learning and then making use of what we learn to achieve what we aim for.
Lifelong learning indeed has many benefits. Be open to always growing your knowledge, and you won’t regret it. Would you like to add anything in the comments below? If you know someone who needs to read my blog post, please share it. Thank you!!
