How do you mitigate the unexpected, so that you’re thankful for having done so? Life is full of ups and downs and some events can have more serious consequences than others. Read my article to find some simple ways to better prepare for the unforeseen.

On my self-improvement blog, I often share self-help, self-care, and motivational tips. While we can’t control life all the time, there are key ways to better deal with the unexpected. Much of what I’ll list below in my blog post is about beliefs and actions. This is not about the technical aspect of risk mitigation.
“If it’s stress of things that we cannot control, what you have to do is you mitigate that stress as much as possible. You’ve planned, you’ve trained, you’ve done everything you can in your power to mitigate the stress that’s facing you. And then after that, there’s nothing you can do. So, you have to let that one go.” – Jocko Willink
“You can never protect yourself 100%. What you do is protect yourself as much as possible and mitigate risk to an acceptable degree. You can never remove all risk.” – Kevin Mitnick
Let’s dive into it:
1. Right attitude
Having an attitude that’s conducive to adapting and accepting that you need to prepare in advance for anything to happen at any time, helps much. On the other hand, refusing to accept that things can deteriorate, or just being complacent, isn’t going to help. I’ve seen that being open to taking possible measures is vital.
2. Stay informed
While the unforeseen happens at any time, taking you by surprise, staying informed with what is happening helps to take precautions. In a cyclone scenario, listening to the weather forecast can help predict that a storm is about to come. Measures to take can be anticipated.
3. Lifelong learning
Through continuous and ongoing learning, you stay updated with what’s happening. Be it listening to the news daily, or learning about the best practices in your industry, staying abreast with the latest developments can give you a great advantage in dealing with unexpected things.

Be positive, optimistic, and persevere. Life struggles make you stronger than you were before. Persistency can make a huge difference between those who give up and those who keep going and accept that learning from past failure is a part of success.
5. Embrace change
Change can be for the better or worse. Often, it’s avoided, hated, and resisted. While reducing the risks in life, having an approach that’s conducive to accepting change can be handy. It’s often hard, but having done so makes moving forward much easier.

6. Take calculated risks
Risks are part of life, and success (however you define that for yourself) involves some degree of liability. If you choose not to venture, you’ve already lost. Take calculated risks and challenges. Being informed, knowing your area of expertise, and having a good circle of relevant contacts for advice are some ways that could support in taking the right decisions.
With unforeseen circumstances in life, taking precautions through insurance is often the first thing that comes to mind. Car, housing, and medical insurance are some common examples. Investing in children’s education for a better future is also crucial for parents.
8. Save money
Plan your savings, even if you’re still young. The more you can save, the better. You never know in case of emergency, how much could be needed. So, enjoy life, and keep some money aside as well.
Plan for retirement ahead. Health and elderly care are often things to think about beforehand. While many people tend to stay alone, with no family members living in the same house, these measures may help for better circumstances.
Last but not least, having a side-hustle can be fun while earning some extra cash at the same time. My blog provides me with personal growth while I also monetize it. Think of what you would prefer… Have a plan to realize it and take action.
5 benefits of honing your side-hustle in life
To sum up, it’s part of life to experience events that could need mitigation of different types of risks. While as humans, we can’t stop them all from happening, we can, fortunately, prepare beforehand by having the right attitude and taking some key measures. Would you like to comment below?
