Don’t miss out on the benefits of skills practice. Just accumulating information isn’t enough. To see the best results, apply skills in real-life situations.

I share self-improvement tips for bloggers and digital solopreneurs. Some of my most popular article topics include personal growth. In this article, I highlight some of the gains for everyone and then list those for content creators.

Skills practice benefits

You may ask yourself, can you master anything without practicing?  A popular saying sums it up concisely.  Indeed, you have to experience them for yourself.

The saying goes:

‘Practice makes perfect’

Through my blogging journey (6 years, time of writing), I’ve learned lots of new things. Having skills without practice isn’t a reality. I apply them, see how they go, and tweak them for the best results.

How does practice help you improve a skill?

Learning is the first part.  To truly see the gains, apply what you grasp.  Without doing so, learning is incomplete.  Read my other post before choosing between individual courses vs subscriptions.

Reading, watching, and listening are different ways to absorb.  However, test things out for yourself.  Apply things to experience them.

You can fail at first.  It’s nothing too serious, as it’s part of self-improvement.  Find out what didn’t work and why.

Not repeating past mistakes is a life lesson gained.  It’s natural to find that something’s missing.  Take measures to fill the gap.

Skills that require practice need to be applied.  It’s like reading how to ride a bicycle, but never actually riding one.  You’re competent or rather become competent when you’ve experienced it.

This is a non-exhaustive list.  Each of these needs application.  You can’t just know about them to master them.

The 19 gains:

  1. Real-world experience
  2. Desired or improved results
  3. Better grasp
  4. Absorb
  5. Retain
  6. Creativity
  7. Critical thinking
  8. Problem-solving
  9. Self-improvement
  10. Boost in confidence
  11. Professionalism
  12. Storytelling
  13. Writing
  14. Video creation
  15. Polishing
  16. Creativity
  17. Innovativeness
  18. Boost in productivity
  19. Networking opportunities

Gains for everyone

Specifically:

  • Real-world experience
  • Desired or improved results
  • Better grasp
  • Absorb
  • Retain
  • Creativity
  • Critical thinking
  • Problem-solving
  • Self-improvement
  • Boost in confidence
  • Professionalism

Real-world experience benefits happen when you apply things.  Just knowing about them won’t bring results.  If you’re serious enough, you experience them yourself.

When trying out things in real-life scenarios, you can understand them better.  Better still, know how they apply to your case, situation, and circumstances.  Devise strategies that are relevant to you for desired or improved results.

Through a better grip and better absorption, you understand the concepts.  By applying, you get the competencies.  Hone them as needed.

Creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving are all in practice.  I remember participating in a workshop for problem-solving.  It was interactive and we worked in groups.

Through self-improvement, you gain a boost in self-confidence.  It supports making informed decisions.  When you’re poised, you come off as more professional.

With or without technical skills

The talents you need as a blogger are never passive.  They’re far more than knowledgeable.  It’s writing articles, publishing, and measuring results.

While I’m not a techie, I found handy business online course options on the platform.  You could benefit from boosting your business skills.  If you’re either a tech professional or looking to hone your talents, there’s lots for you!

Why?

  • Bootcamps
  • Hands-on projects
  • Job ready skills

For content creators

Here are some skills practice examples for bloggers and vloggers.  These are only achievable through application.

Here they are:

  • Storytelling
  • Writing
  • Video creation
  • Polishing
  • Creativity
  • Innovativeness
  • Boost in productivity
  • Networking opportunities

Note that the list is non-exhaustive.  While you improve them over time, it’s also an ongoing process.  Ask for feedback, evaluate, and improve.

Storytelling when blogging or vlogging is a developed talent.  In the online world, you have hardly 1 second or 3, to grab attention.  That’s your article headline or video hook.  The rest depends on your story.

Writing for bloggers develops when in action.  Video content creation for vloggers is the same.  Unless you go out of your comfort zone and be open to feedback, you won’t improve and find your success.

Although I primarily blog, I also vlog.  It’s mostly for fun.  If I don’t publish articles or videos, how will I ever improve? Therefore, I fully support the benefits of taking action.

Through feedback, you can hone, tweak, and polish your work.  Being original through your writing voice helps.  Have your style and branding, improve creativity and innovation.

With practice, you get closer to perfection over time (although not yet there). Being better than what you were yesterday is genuine progress.  Get more done in less time, and boost productivity levels.

Networking is crucial for content creators.  Bloggers find their peers, and so do vloggers.  It’s a sign of your expertise.  To reach such a stage, you have to apply your skills and build experience and expertise.

Working in my home office, I prefer mostly online networking.  It’s convenient and fits my agenda.  Meeting face-to-face can, however, build better connections.  Therefore, have a combination of both types, as far as possible.

Perfection might never come.  However, there’s progress.  Never wait to be perfect to start anything.  Just dive into it and get started.

Conclusion

Skills practice benefits everyone and in many aspects of life.  With content creation, it’s inevitable.  Learning is lifelong, and to master the skills, take action.

  1. Another great blog, Sharvi! Could you provide us with some tips on how to start out with vlogging and which platforms you prefer and why? I’ve never felt myself photogenic, but we all have to start somewhere, right?
