I started blogging as a hobby 7 years ago.  I got my first paid gig after a year.  Becoming my side hustle, I use a few different monetization methods myself.

Blog monetization examples

What is monetization in blogging?  If your aim as a content creator is to generate revenue, you need monetization platforms.  Blogs are one of them.

Along with your site, you should use other platforms to support it.  For example, I’m on social media and have a newsletter.  You’re also better off with multiple sources of traffic for better diversification.

Bloggers can also be vloggers.  They can also start podcasts.  For example, I’ve started vlogging through Instagram reels.  In addition to your content creation activity, you need ways to generate revenue.

Which monetization is best?

With so many options available, you need not go for all.  Instead, choose the best ones for yourself.  Focus on those that support your goals.

Beginner friendly

Who said that newbies can’t generate revenue?  While advanced bloggers are often more apt to do so, there are options for everyone.  You can start some things with a low number of readers and visitors, provided they’re well-targeted leads.

Beginner examples:

  • Affiliate Marketing 
  • Selling digital products 
  • Selling physical products 
  • Selling services

Options for monetization of WordPress, include running ads.  Some ad networks don’t have strict monetization eligibility criteria.  Their monetization requirements are low enough for newbies.

I joined WordAds, which pays by impressions.  Another option is Ezoic.  With higher traffic levels, you can consider networks like Mediavine.  

Affiliate Marketing also works for beginners with a good target audience.  You can sell your products and services such as freelance or coaching.  Anyone normally makes fewer sales with low traffic.  However, building the right audience through good segmentation helps.

Experienced level

More experienced content creators normally have reasonable traffic levels.  Assuming that an experienced one does, they can go beyond the options listed for newbies.  There’s more to add to their list.

Examples:

  • Sponsorship
  • Influencer
  • Speak at events

There are more options, of course.  As examples, I’ll focus on these 3.  These work when having a reasonable number of views. 

Sponsorships are paid by brands.  They carefully screen and select who they work with.  Unlike in Affiliate Marketing, they pay you even if there aren’t any sales from your posts. 

Influencers are mostly on social media.  However, blogs can be part of their package.  Nano Influencers on Instagram can have as few as 1000 followers.  However, they often target a specific niche.

Not every blogger gets invited to speak at events.  However, it can happen to experts in certain fields.  This requires a high level of public speaking and presentation skills as well.

Blogging plan with strategy 

What are monetization strategies?  If you intend to make your activity a side hustle, plan accordingly.  If it turns into a full-time income, you can take it a few steps further.  Have a good strategy in place.

As my blog had started as a hobby, my articles were more general at first.  However, as it developed into a side hustle, I needed to devise a strategy.  The best is to have one right from the start for yourself.

There are many options.  Find what you desire most.  Work smart towards slaying your set goals.
