I started on my own over a decade ago.  I’ve worked on my terms for 11 years (time of writing).  My blogging began 6 years ago.

Having a business degree isn’t a must.  However, my BBA gave me handy support.  It equipped me with useful knowledge to apply.

Why choose solopreneurship?

Going into business solo is the choice for many.  It has pros and cons.  It has perks as well as drawbacks.

Solopreneurship isn’t always easy.  It takes working smarter with perseverance.  You sometimes feel lonely as well.

Having a flexible agenda is one advantage.  Being your own boss gives you freedom.  Working from home, you don’t need to rent office space and can spend more time with family.  Go the solopreneur extra mile, whenever possible, for best results.

25 tasks solopreneur checklist

The ideal task checklist for solopreneurs will depend on specific types of activities.  For illustration purposes, I’ll list one for bloggers, as that’s what my blog is about.  Other kinds of solopreneurs can use it and adapt to specific needs.

Here’s the checklist:

  1. Set goals
  2. Mission Statement
  3. Business Plan
  4. Platform and tools
  5. WordPress
  6. Sales and Marketing
  7. Email Marketing
  8. Social Media
  9. Networking
  10. Finance and Accounting
  11. Budgeting
  12. Financial reporting
  13. Taxation
  14. Administration
  15. Compliance
  16. Administrative tasks
  17. Time management
  18. Productivity
  19. Skill building
  20. Physical events
  21. Online courses
  22. Social life
  23. Family life
  24. Self-care
  25. Hobbies

This list is non-exhaustive but handy to start with.  It’s quite simple.  Some activities are more complex, but they give a basic idea.

Set your goals meticulously

The first 3 points on my list are about goals, mission, and a business plan.  You should nail down what you want to achieve.  If not, you could waste precious resources for nothing.

Have a mission statement.  When I first started blogging, it was a hobby.  However, it turned into a side hustle.  I decided to niche down for better results.  I didn’t have a clear strategy at first but developed it later.

A business plan supports your success.  Market research beforehand to find valuable information.  Use it for better decision-making.

Platform and tools

The next 2 points on the checklist are platforms, tools, and WordPress.  This relates to the technology you choose.  Most solopreneurs will have an online presence.

When it comes to WordPress, go for self-hosting as far as possible.  I started as a hobby and on another version of the CMS.  Read more about choosing your best platform.  My other post highlights the best platform options for publishing articles

If you’re not a blogger, you might choose another platform instead of WordPress.  Having a LinkedIn page is enough for some.  Others use only social media.  However, a website often looks more professional, adding credibility.

Email Marketing and better sales

The sales and marketing part is crucial.  It’s the center of your activity.  Without it, all your actions go to waste.  Always network to find new connections, or as often as possible.

You might dislike being salesy, and you don’t have to.  Instead, provide value by educating and nurturing your leads.  When solving issues that they face, you’re providing valuable solutions.

Use ads if you choose to.  Take advantage of free organic traffic as well.  Leverage social media.  Most importantly, own your email list!

Finance, compliance, and administration

The somewhat boring parts of solopreneur tasks are, however, crucial.  Your accounting, budgeting, reporting, and taxation obligations are a must.  Block time on your calendar to complete them.  Have legal pages on your website or blog.

You can seek professional services, such as an accountant’s support.  However, for those getting started, it might be more affordable to do it yourself initially.  Having a professional to handle it takes off the workload, while you focus on your part.

Time management for better productivity

Solopreneurs often take up all roles.  You need to juggle tasks, and meet deadlines.  Productivity is key to meeting set goals.

If you’re on your own in your home office, you might long for some company.  How about a coworking platform?  Better still, it supports your productivity.

Skill-building for the better

Skill-building is for everyone and is a lifelong journey.  For solopreneurs working on your terms, you need to take the initiative.  You can choose to hone your skills or not.

With blogging, I’m learning all the time.  Sometimes it’s a bit formal in style, and sometimes informally.  I mostly go for online methods and gained some handy skills on Coursera.  I learned new things about self-hosting.

Social life with quality time

Being a solopreneur means you’re likely to spend time solo.  Take breaks to unwind.  Also, have a social life outside your home office.

Spend time with others, and have me-time as well.  Self-care is crucial to avoid burnout.  Take time for your hobbies and enjoy.

Conclusion

Use my solopreneur tasks checklist to your advantage.  Tackle any crucial to-dos left, for the better.  Enjoy the journey and unwind as well.
