Where to publish articles online?  If you’re wondering so, you’ve come to the right place.  In my article, I’ll share about the best platforms that you can choose from, for blogging.

Choosing your web hosting service

The right platform, as well as your choice of hosting, affects your blog.  Consider your level of need for support service, your tech skills, and your budget.  Also look at the provider’s reliability, security level, and any other you require most.

I chose DreamHost after considering others in the industry (for a second site I had).  If you value reliability, you might benefit as well.  Certain things stand out.

Reasons that I went for them:

  • 100% uptime is guaranteed
  • You get support 7/24
  • Security and privacy

Being rather user-friendly for self-hosting, I quickly learned the skills.  Having used easier CMS for years, I wanted to grow my experience.  Even being a non-techie, I was able to set up my site myself.

Self-hosted blogs

Where to publish articles for money?  If you want full control and ownership of your site, choose self-hosted WordPress.org.  You can decide what to do, based on your success goals.

With 8 years of experience (updated), blogging started as my hobby.  Similar to many other newbies, I had first lacked the knowledge.  With no tech skills and experience, I had avoided self-hosting at first.

However, over time, I saw the constraints.  The opportunity to learn more came when I started a project.  I also started a self-hosted site to support it.

Through the experience, I discovered the freedom of WordPress.org.  I also found out about choosing the right web hosting service for myself.

Where to publish articles for free?

If you’re purely into a hobby, you might want to consider free options, such as the WordPress.com free plan.  I started there as a hobby.  When I saw how I enjoyed the activity, I upgraded to benefit from more features.  There are also ideas to promote your site for free online.

If you start a free account and later want a professional-looking domain name, you might upgrade.  You might also end up upgrading if you want to remove ads.  Even pay to gain revenue from the ads running on your blog.

Paid Content Management Systems (CMS)

WordPress.com (paid plans), Wix, and Squarespace are easy to set up.  You need no tech skills.  However, you’ll have certain limitations, especially if you set monetization goals.

I use WordPress.com for this blog.  It was convenient to set up as a newbie.  I’ve also worked with brands.  However, the freedom and control are less than on WordPress.org sites.

Social media for writing

I’ve seen the benefits of using social media.  It’s a handy way to spread risks.  Never rely on just one means to drive traffic.  Use your blog, vlog, email list, or even a podcast for more reach.

On Medium and LinkedIn, you can publish your articles.  However, similar to CMS, you won’t have a good level of control.  Following the platform terms is crucial.  Otherwise, they could just shut down your account.

While social media is free, there are also paid plans. Premium plans can provide additional features, such as verification.  Paid or free, you’ll always depend on the platform algorithms for visibility.

TypeProsCons
Self-hostedYou have control, can customize your site, and have ownership.Need some level of tech knowledge.  You’ll have to promote and market your blog and take care of maintenance.

Social mediaGreat for trends and seasonal content.  Potential to go viral.  Reach an existing platform audience with instant engagement.Visibility depends on algorithms.  Limited freedom in content formats.  Posts are short-lived, only shown for days in the feed.
Recap with pros and cons

Specific places for your blog

Self-hosted, free account options, CMS, and social media are broad categories.  For more specific examples, I’ve listed 10 popular and handy ones.  I’ve already used 8 of them myself (updated).  There are, of course, more that exist.  However, these tend to be popular choices.

10 specific examples:

  1. WordPress.org
  2. WordPress.com
  3. Blogger
  4. Medium
  5. Wix
  6. Squarespace
  7. X (formerly Twitter)
  8. LinkedIn
  9. Facebook
  10. Reddit

The ones I’ve had article-publishing experience with, are WordPress.org and WordPress.com.  As for Wix, I once had an online shop.  On social media, I mostly do shorter posts, repurpose, and reshare my blog articles.

Things to consider before choosing:

  • Your goals and objectives?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • Where do they hang out?
  • Your tech expertise level?
  • Steep or easy learning curve?
  • Ease of use?
  • Your budget?

Staying consistent with content creation is crucial.  You don’t have to post daily if you can’t.  However, have a reasonable schedule, and stick to it.

Related, complementary, and alternatives

You might want to consider related activities.  Some go hand in hand with a blog, while others might replace it.  Decide which one suits you.

Complementary activities when having your site:

  • Kindle Direct Publishing
  • Digital products
  • Freelance services
  • Coaching services
  • Vlogging
  • Podcasting

Alternatives to publishing yourself:

  • Content curation
  • Guest posting
  • Syndication

After the details, you’ve seen the different opportunities available.  As I pointed out, go with self-hosting as far as possible.  The other blogging platforms look easier to start with but often aren’t the best in the long term.  Social media channels, however, are platforms on their own.

Self-hosted might look techie at first.  I felt the same as a newbie. However, like me, you can take some time to learn, and go for it (if you choose to).

Conclusion

Have you decided yet, where to publish articles online?  Remember your goals.  Choose the best option for yourself.

  1. Brilliant tips Sharvina. I really am well knowledgeable and aware of this publishing sites or places where you can promote your articles as a Writer.

I used Medium before (I still have an account there), WordPress.org and WordPress.com which is the current one that I use to promote my work plus I use the free plan since I have no money to buy a domain name.

Lastly, I tried Reddit before but I was not impressed with it
