Why promote blog

Your content is valuable.  It’s your hours of hard work, maybe even for years.  Since you started publishing articles, you must have spent lots of time.  On the other hand, if you’re still a newbie, you’ll learn the basics, and gain experience.

The content you create and publish can reach more readers.  Drive traffic from other sources, and even for free.  Don’t let your hard work go unnoticed.

When you monetize your platforms, you’ll gain from repurposing.  It’s crucial to work smarter, saving time and effort.  Read my other post for tips on repurposing without spending.

You need eyes on your content.  Better still, you want the right leads to find it.  Fortunately, you can share your work on other platforms.

2. Good SEO supports organic visits

Search Engine Optimization has been around for years.  Using long tail keywords can help you rank on Google.  I use a premium version of an SEO tool.

SEO is ever-changing.  What works today, can get outdated soon.  However, you can learn and stay on top of things.

Work on driving free traffic through organic search and social.  SEO is a long-term game.  If done well, it’s beneficial.  

3. Pinterest is a search engine

Pinterest can be a great source of traffic.  It also depends on your niche.  My site doesn’t get much from it, but it still helps.

You’ll have to learn how to use it first.  While it’s helpful, if not done properly, it can become useless.  Keep up with the latest best practices.

4. Facebook does help

Promote your blog on social media.  Facebook tends to have seasoned users.  If you benefit from such a demographic, maybe it’s for you.  I do get visitors from there, however, Google tends to be my top source.

Social media, in general, can drive free traffic.  However, these platforms want you to pay, so you can’t rely on them.  Algorithms change, and you can’t control that.

5. Instagram story links

Instagram is mostly an image and video platform.  There’s not much scope to link to your site in posts.  When it comes to stories, they can help.

The link in bio CTAs might not prompt many to visit your site.  I notice that with story links, it can get better.  Instagram stays one of my lowest referrers.  It’s meant to be used for DMs and users tend to stay on the platform itself.  

6. Twitter is now X

Twitter, renamed X, is an interesting platform.  You can link to your site easily in posts.  With controversies, some could choose to stay off it.  However, I find it useful.

It’s handy to find interesting accounts and follow them.  You could use it for relationship-building.  I note that even though it drives traffic, it’s not among my top sources.

7. LinkedIn professional networking

LinkedIn with your professional profile can be valuable.  It’s an employment-focused platform.  In addition to recruiters, sales professionals also benefit from using it. 

Bloggers who have a pen name could prefer to avoid LinkedIn.  If you want to get found with your name, you may go for it.  For compliance reasons, refer to the terms before setting up an account.

8. YouTube is so popular

YouTube is one that everyone uses, at least as followers.  If you like to show your face, publish your videos.  The videos tend to be of higher quality than on Instagram.  YouTube is often said to be saturated.

I started making reels on Instagram.  Using my smartphone camera, I prefer reels.  Even though you can use a phone when starting on YouTube, you’ll eventually need more professional equipment later on.

You can add text beneath your videos.  You can also use the space to link to your site.  It’s a platform on its own, but you can also add CTAs with links.

9. WordPress Reader

With WordPress.com, I automatically have access to the Reader.  It’s a great way to find others.  It genuinely boosts engagement.

The WordPress Reader tends to be my second source of traffic.  Google search is normally the first.  Social media and email come after.

10. Email marketing is the best

While social media is helpful, don’t rely on it uniquely. You can’t control the algorithm. Have an email list.

Subscribers can opt-in by giving their email address. You offer a freebie in the form of a lead magnet. Read more about email marketing in my post.

11. Guest blogging with peers

Start to guest blog in your niche.  You can write for their site and accept posts on yours.  It’s a friendly way to share your audience.  It must genuinely help your readers.  

Being natural is crucial.  Spamming can be regretful.  Google doesn’t like unnatural backlinks and can penalize it.  

I don’t normally do guest posts.  However, I do have a few award articles.  In those I introduced peers that I appreciate, and who nominated me.

12. Quora is a great forum

Quora is a place to ask and answer questions.  Genuinely helping others is key.  You can upvote or downvote replies.

When you’re seen as an expert, people trust you.  They can see your profile and even visit your links.  Use it carefully and be sure to provide useful replies.

13. Medium has good visibility

Medium is a platform where you can publish articles.  It’s known to have good visibility.  Being on it can boost your views.

It’s often said that Medium articles rank top on searches.  However, quality is key.  Do work smart and publish great content.

14. Commenting on blogs

It’s easy to leave a comment on other sites.  Through your gravatar, others can find you and your site.  A gravatar is your unique avatar, through WordPress.com.

You can also leave a link in the comments on other blogs.  However, beware of spamming.  Many site owners remove such comments.  Always prefer meaningful words that add value and stay on topic.

15. Submit to directories

You can submit your site to directories.  They can list your site relevantly.  Be careful when choosing which ones you want, as some can be spammy.

Consider your niche.  Maybe your location could be relevant, especially if you have physical products.  In case you network at physical venues, you could target specific location directories.

Measuring and analyzing stats

Whichever are your preferred platforms and methods, use insights.  Your platform stats tell you a lot.  Use the data to your advantage. 

See what works well on each account.  Repurpose in the best format for specific places.  It might take some time to gather useful info if you’re new.

  1. Excellent article. I have a lot of traction with Pinterest when I use it, I am just not so great at keeping up with using it.

    Since I realised you could add a clickable link to Insta Stories, that has been a big help and I am on one directory that has done well for me.

    This year, Pinterest was my biggest driver, followed by Google search and then WordPress reader. I like to keep track of my stats each month to see where I am getting traffic and work harder there when I get time.
