Avoid creating generic content

I had to choose between blog niche vs general blog.  I’ve been a solopreneur for a decade, and a blogger for 6 years (time of writing).  I narrowed down my content over the years.

My first site started as a hobby.  I was sharing more general tips.  It was fun but didn’t address any segment.

Later, I started my current domain name ‘Tips from Sharvi’, deciding to share self-improvement tips.  This site had a niche but needed more refining.  I narrowed it down further from ‘self-improvement blog’ to ‘self-improvement for bloggers and digital solopreneurs’.

You can see through my journey that I chose to be more focused.  More specifically, my readers are bloggers and digital solopreneurs, looking for self-improvement.  My popular topics include skill-building, productivity, and working smarter.  I now have someone to talk to as my ideal client.

Why choose the right blog niche?

When publishing articles, videos, or podcasts, you speak to someone.   Unlike the biggest brands, you can’t speak to everyone.  The whole world can relate to generic soft drinks.  However, a blogger addresses a segment, solving their problems.

You need to develop a brand voice.  People like talking to humans.  You need to connect with the readers, showing your personality.  Read my other post for the gains of having a writing voice.

Having well-defined who you cater to, you can talk to them better.  Write with meaning.  Solve the pain points of your ideal client persona.

Simple process to select the best

How to choose a blog niche?  It may seem like a huge mysterious task when you’re new.  However, it will look simpler, when you break things down.  I’ve been there already, and it all now seems easier than before.

There is no rocket science about the process.  It’s a simple logical series of steps to take.  These small tasks join together to achieve a larger plan.

8 steps to find and select your best option:

1. Brainstorm types of blogs

Make a long list of options that suit you.  Consider your interests.  Think of things that you can spend hours talking about, without running out of ideas.

2. Consider your audience and persona

Know your target audience and ideal client persona.  If you’re writing to solve a problem, who is it for?  If you write general content, you’ll end up catching no one’s attention.

3. Research-based proven success

Analyze (but don’t copy) relevant popular content creators.  See what tends to work.  Ask yourself if you can offer anything special and unique to add value.  Why would anyone prefer you over others?

4. Shortlist best possibilities

Narrowing down on your options.  Consider your expertise and passions.  Do you have enough experience in the area?

It’s best to have credentials to support you.  Having either experience, or qualifications in the field, or both together, can be favorable.  Ensure that you have some EEAT (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) in your chosen area.

5. Feasibility study and profitability

If you’re keen on monetizing your site, think strategically.  Having a niche supports attracting the right readers for your products.  Find out if there’s potential for growth in what you want to go for.

There is a great framework that I came across.  It helps you to choose a profession, based on your life purpose.  You can also use it to find your best-specialized topic area.  Read to learn more in my post on ikigai.

6. Consider monetization opportunities

Monetize your site strategically.  There are blog niches that make money.  Some even tend to make more money than others.

Follow your passion.  At the same time, aim to generate substantial traffic and revenue.  If you focus solely on money, you might give up too soon.

Blogging is a long journey, and patience is crucial.  I got my first paid gig after 1 year.  It could take more or less time to start seeing results.  Creating content for your target audience is a time saver, avoiding waste!

There are various income streams you can choose from.  Common examples are ads, affiliate marketing, sponsored content, and selling products or services.  I’ve already started the first 3, but I don’t yet have my own products.

7. Test and market research

Before pinning down what to choose, test your idea.  Market research and competitor analysis are a must.  While these terms may sound complicated, luckily bloggers can use simpler methods.

Some convenient tests are keyword research and surveys.  Join relevant Facebook groups, and see what your ideal client may be facing.  Reddit and Quora forums are also helpful.

8. Create relevant content

Once you’ve pinned down your best-specialized topic area, launch your site.  Create content for your potential clients.  Remember what you plan to sell as products (own or affiliate).  To attract the right leads, provide the right content.

It’s normal to start as a newbie, learn, and improve continuously.  However, you may prefer to have a segment in mind right from the start.  It’s best to focus from day one, as far as possible.

Conclusion

Use my blog niche ideas and carefully pin down your best option.  Take action by starting your site.  Enjoy your journey, catering to your ideal clients through content that they crave.

  1. Great post and perspective, thanks. I totally agree. It can be hard to drill into a niche. And while I get your generic cola/soft drink analogy, I think that the rise of craft sodas probably resonates more with individuals now. A bit like craft beer.
