Do you use a skim and scan reading strategy? If not, you might be doing way too much reading. Work smarter by adopting these handy techniques.
As a blogger, I read, write, and even vlog. My readers are mostly other digital solopreneurs, looking for self-improvement on my platforms. Productivity is a key topic on my blog.
Skim vs scan reading
There are differences between the 2 approaches. They’re similar and related, but not the same. They could also be confused for each other.
I find much benefit in both. Knowing how they differ, although subtlety, helps. It supports me to first skim, and then scan if relevant.
When to skim or scan? Skim to get the big picture. You can then decide if the content is right for you. Scan it later on, to grasp key pieces of facts.
The first step supports going through the text quickly to confirm if it’s relevant. Next, you can scan to find stats, facts, and info. You gain from the content while saving time.
Benefits of scan and skim
By using the 2 reading techniques, you gain in many ways. Generally, it boosts productivity, saving you time. If done properly, it could also improve reading and learning skills.
I almost always practice both, one after the other. It’s a natural habit that I’ve developed. Doing so supports better time management and reaching my set goals.
| Benefit | Details |
| Time-saving | Save time by going through chunks of text. Quickly focus on the essential parts. |

| Learn and retain | Simplify your learning. It helps to focus on certain parts. You could also better retain what you grasp. |
| Consume more content | Consume more content in less time. Without getting lost in the details, grasp key concepts. Avoid burnout, simultaneously. |
| Decision-making | Paying attention to the relevant details. Make informed quality decision-making. Do so on time as well. |
| Speedy researching | Speed up your research process. Quickly see if it contains the right stats and facts. Save your time for the main tasks. |
| Information synthesis | Information synthesis becomes easier. Collect the right info from various sources. Accelerate your progress. |
| Critical thinking | Sharpen your critical thinking skills. Grasp details conveniently. Analyze and evaluate in a few minutes or seconds. |

I wrote a post on a similar technique, known as speed reading. You might want to find out more in my other article. This related topic is handy, especially for students who have lots to go through in a short time.
How I benefit joyfully
I use the methods daily and in various ways. I’ll, however, focus on 1 task for illustration purposes. It accompanies me when I revise my course notes.
Being a content creator is ongoing self-improvement. There are always things to learn, skills to upgrade, and new tools to use. I make the most of online courses, learning at my own pace.
When I learn, I often take notes. Watching video tutorials, I prefer to pause and jot down. I also take screenshots if possible, and then make my notes.
I cut down on info overload at this stage itself. Noting only what I need, removes any excess. I also present my notes in easily digestible formats with subheadings, bullet points, and numbers.
When going through my notes days or months later, I use reading techniques. Especially after months, I need to refresh my memory. I skim through and then scan the notes. I also use a highlighter or pen to mark important parts.
Relish your strategy
The techniques might become a part of your day-to-day tasks. However, have a long-term view of yourself. Incorporate habits, in line with your broader strategy.
Embrace a productivity mindset. Incorporate it into your daily life. In doing so, you prioritize it in the real sense. It’s not limited to one activity but flows throughout the day.
Work smart, achieving more in a given time frame. Don’t spend hours, but shorter moments instead on each task. Reach your set goals productively, without work and info overload.
Conclusion
Having a skim and scan reading strategy supports you in many ways. Use it in blogging, other activities, and areas of life. Boost productivity, save time, and focus on your priorities.
