How to choose a blog name?  Do so smartly, following certain best practices.  Read on to find out how.

There’s no rocket science behind choosing a blog name.  However, follow some tips and ideas.

Consider your:

  • Focus
  • Experience
  • Expertise
  • Passion
  • Demand

I’ve been blogging for 7 years.  It started as a hobby, with no proper strategy.  After the first blogiversary, my site turned into a side-hustle.

I initially wasn’t certain what to focus on.  I started broadly, then niched down with experience.  I needed the time to test things out.

Focus as far as possible

My blog name includes my nickname ‘Sharvi’, and not any specific keyword.  Had I known what exactly to focus on, I would have included that in the name.  However, since I wasn’t sure, I used my nickname as part of it.

Using keywords helps to rank better.  However, with all the changes in recent months with AI overviews, it’s not enough.  As far as possible, find relevant keywords.

Ensure that your preferred domain name is available for purchase.  Also, check that it meets all compliance needs.  For example, for copyright purposes.

Your personal name can be handy if you choose to use it.  To the online world and site visitors, it’s easier to understand what your site is about through relevant keywords.  However,  my blog name works for me, even with my nickname instead of keywords.

Niche ideas

Experience is your ally

With EEAT (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness), you’re better off blogging.  Choose your niche, and blog name accordingly.  Write about topics that you genuinely know.

Choose a topic for your blog that you know about thoroughly.  Your experience is valuable.  It’s something that makes you stand out.  Show your story, as it sets you apart from the crowd.  It’s also your branding, personality, and originality.

My experience comes from solopreneurship.  It’s something I live daily, for 12 years already.  As I work from home, I need ways to work smarter.

Blogging is a byproduct of my solopreneur experience.  I started content creation for my own self-improvement reasons.  Finding my readers (mainly other bloggers), it evolved to self-improvement for bloggers and digital solopreneurs.  Have a meaning behind your activity for the long term.

Expertise is powerful

Expertise is often associated with formal education.  It also includes a professional background in a given field.  Having some credentials supports you.

If you blog for a specific niche, highlight your expertise.  It shows that you know more about it than the average person.  You often don’t have to be a high-level expert, but just a few steps ahead of your readers.

My business degree is an advantage in solopreneurship.  I even gain from my knowledge when blogging.  However, my site focuses on working smarter tips, and that’s more of my experience.

If you’re interested in a niche, but don’t have the expertise, build it.  It doesn’t have to take years of learning.  Skill-building is often informal and accessible to everyone.

Blogging skills

Passion for your niche

You’re better off choosing a niche that you’re passionate about.  Otherwise, you’re likely to lose motivation and interest.  What are things that you can talk about for hours, non-stop?

If you’re already guiding friends informally about something, maybe that’s it.  Think about what others turn to you for.  Are you known to have mastered something?

In my case, I’ve been blogging for 7 years.  Initially, my topic was general self-improvement.  Through content creation experience, I’m now more focused on bloggers and digital solopreneurs as my target audience.

Demand for your interest

While all the other points support a strong foundation, check if there’s demand.  This is crucial, especially if you plan to monetize your site.  You may be interested in a specific niche, but do people spend on such a thing?

It’s discouraging if you start, only to find later that you can’t make a side-hustle of it.  Research properly beforehand.  Check forums, social media, and ask people face-to-face.  Conduct a survey for feedback, especially from relevant people.  They should be right for your target audience.

Name or anonymous

Anonymous blogs have their pros and cons.  In some cases, it’s preferable to stay anonymous.  However, often showing up works best.  There’s a sweet spot for everyone, including using a pen name.

Your blog name should be created strategically.  Your writer’s name also needs a thought.  Will you use your real name or a pen name? Ask yourself these questions.

Newbie bloggers often hesitate to dive in.  There are lessons to learn, both personal and from others.  Whenever possible, learn what works as best practices.

Can your blog have multiple topics?

If you ask, ‘Can I blog about different topics?’.  Create content pieces that support each other.  It should be helpful to your readers.

While creating related article topics, avoid duplicate content.  Interlink to articles.  Internal and external linking is helpful when relevant.

Can blogs be about anything?  Not really, as this is likely to create confusion.  It’s unfavourable for readers as well as search engines.

Find your blog name creatively.  Have fun crafting one that stands out.  Show your personality and EEAT.

Conclusion

How to choose a blog name is intriguing.  There’s no right or wrong option, but the best you can find for yourself.  Take a strategic approach and find the right one for you.

  1. Great post. I especially like the point about blogging about several things. As a writer with many passions, I finally decided the reason I started blogging was to promote my books. I’ve recently archived other posts that were unrelated to writing. There are many excellent points here. Thanks, Sharvina!

  2. Great suggestions Sharvi. It’s interesting because that was the one thing that I had the most difficult time with. Sure we can write whatever we want but the name is the key. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Choosing a blog name is an important consideration. The challenge is knowing what we want to write about for many years. Midwest Mary is my oldest blog. I had a few others that were very specific, but I later decided to put everything on my original blog.

  4. Like a lot of people, I suspect, I was unsure when I started about the distinction between blog name and web address. Nothing I chose seemed to be available as a web address, so I defaulted to my name. And then I realized that whatever I put in large print on the home page banner would be my perceived blog name.
