1. Online learning platforms vs traditional education
Virtual environments are flexible. Traditional methods have their importance as well. For professionals, following courses at their pace is often most convenient.
I feel that young students crave the need to meet face-to-face more. High school and university life is often an experience not to miss. However, combined with virtual study, it’s great.
When it comes to professionals, flexible methods can be best suited. Corporate employees, business persons, and those self-employed, often lead a hectic life. Acquiring knowledge at their own pace is often a great option.
If you’re a blogger or digital solopreneur, you might be looking for helpful resources. I’ve put together a list of my suggested tools. Find my recommended self-help resources.
2. What I gained from non-traditional education
I somehow wasn’t the conventional type. I studied for my degree while I already had a full-time job. I also moved from the corporate world to working on my terms a decade ago.
Remote methods supported me much as I studied part time, while in a full-time job. The method consisted of a mixture of classroom-based and virtual sessions. As a solopreneur, I enjoy flexibility and improve my mastery.
You can build new skills, advance your career, and even earn degrees. Working on your terms, you need to be on top of things. Adopt a can do attitude and be better prepared for any changes.

More tips
Go for the right online learning platform
Select your provider thoughtfully. Consider your needs and what they offer. This is a first step, and an important one.
Consider these when choosing your platform:
- Your goals
- Your budget
- Your schedule
- Your best study method (click for my other article on learning styles)
Tips for skill-building success
With flexible methods, you should take initiative and persevere. It can be easier to give up than with traditional methods. Life gets in the way, and soon you realize you’ve missed your goals.
- Set realistic goals. Take into account what is reasonable for you. Do also aim high enough for quality results.
- Adopt a dedicated study space. Being a blogger, I have a home office. This is where I read and watch enriching videos.
- Set a schedule. Have an agenda and stick to it. Unless something crucial comes up, don’t put it aside. Read about the best time to study in my other post.
- Be active in your lessons. Participate to gain fully. Do your part, and network with others in the same course, if possible. Exchange ideas and debate for personal growth.
- Practice and improve. There’s no real progress if you don’t put it into practice. For example, I build proficiency that will support my set goals. When I had to start a new email list, I prioritized mastering that.
- Ensure breaks for better productivity. Work smart, and get better results. Leave your desk, take a walk, drink some water, and get back. Try it every 25 minutes or so, and see the difference.
- Persevere, although it’s easier to give up. You can get distracted from what you undertake. Be the one who persists, instead of those who don’t make it till the end.
Whatever be your aim for progress, you can find a course to support you. However, you’ll only see the advancements when you try things out. Practice and only get better at what you value the most.
Conclusion
Online learning platforms can support your success. Consider your needs and choose the right one for yourself. Make the most of convenient and affordable means for self-improvement.

I’ve done my share of both traditional and on-line learning and I think on-line learning or reading books at home by yourself can accomplish a lot. Many of the worst and most ineffective learning experiences that I’ve had in my life were classroom learning with a bad teacher, and for that you paid expensive tuition. Today tuition is even higher. When I look at my kids experience at colleges today I feel that there’s got to be something better as well as less expensive. Increased use of on-line learning might be a way to grow our knowledge in the 21st century. There are certain things that are difficult to do on-line, labs, and demonstrations requiring physical presence.
