Why skill development for vloggers?

I’ll elaborate on the points I already listed.  These are the examples I highlight.  Find more details of each point.

Shooting and editing

Shooting videos concerns a wide range of skill levels.  From Hollywood-quality cameras to smartphones, there’s a huge difference.  With Instagram reels, you don’t have to worry.  Authenticity, originality, and showing the real you pay off.  Even video editing ranges from basic to highly professional.  For example, I use only simple techniques for my reels.

Graphics

Graphics can be in the form of thumbnails for your videos.  You can also create illustrations in your videos.  For example, I sometimes insert an infographic for visual information.  This supports easy understanding and retention.

Audio

Recording and editing audio affect your video quality.  In turn, it can determine your viewing time.  While you hone these, technology changes, and so do equipment upgrading needs.

Cinematography

Cinematography is complex, however, everyone doesn’t need a high level of perfection.  For Instagrammers, you can be natural using basic-level equipment and skills.  For long-form videos on YouTube, you’re better off with more advanced equipment and editing.

Lighting

You always gain from lots of lighting.  I prefer natural daylight.  My reels are full of nature, and I shoot them outdoors.  If you do speaking videos indoors, prefer having a good ring light.

Script and stories

Scripting and storytelling add value to your content quality.  Originality shines, and being authentic shows on camera.  Through feedback, you can improve your work over time.

Search

Not only search engines, but all platforms benefit from good SEO.  On Instagram, keywords and hashtags support targeting ideal audiences.  I use hashtags sparingly and include the right keywords in my captions.

Insights

Use stats as much as possible.  Refer to your platform insights.  I value checking watch time, aside from likes, follows, and other metrics.  Shares and DMs are other key metrics to use.

Speak

When you speak on camera, it’s something you develop over time.  Practice and feedback are a must.  Don’t overthink perfection, just start now, or you might never do so.

Body language

When you appear on video, your viewers watch and hear you.  If it’s a voice-over, they might only get to hear it.  In speaking videos, the focus is even more on you.  Your body language conveys things.  I mostly do nature reels with music, and appear in them sometimes.

Interview and networking

Interview guests when you need specialised expertise.  For example, you may be a vlogging coach, but need someone experienced in photography.  Develop your interview skills for better results.  Network with your peers for collaboration opportunities.

Digital marketing and email

Creating content is the first part.  You also have to promote your posts.  There are free and paid options.  Spread the word on social media, and use platform SEO.  Best of all, inform your email list subscribers about relevant educational content that helps.

Administrative and productivity

Doing administrative tasks is part of it all.  For monthly statistical reports or accounting, you need to ensure completion.  You can either tackle it yourself or find someone to handle it.  For newbies, learning helps.  At first, many don’t have a budget for a freelance VA.

Skill development goals and benefits

Set strategic goals for your solopreneur vlogger, be it a side hustle or full-time business.  Learning new things or polishing what you know has multiple benefits.  Sometimes, you might even have to pivot on something rather different.

Find the similarities, differences, pros, and cons of each in my other article.

How to plan skill development:

  • Set goals
  • Review the current situation
  • Find what’s missing
  • How to achieve

In a nutshell, a simple way to plan for it is to start by setting your goals.  Review your actual situation.  Find what’s missing and decide how to get there.

Ways to skill development:

  • Upskill
  • Cross-skill
  • Reskill

You can find that you have to sharpen your existing skills (upskill).  You might have to develop skills in a different, yet related area (cross-skill).  You might pivot completely by learning something new, in a new area (reskill).

Much of what video creation includes is related.  However, there could be unexpected needs as well.  For example, if you start a blog or podcast, you get on a different type of platform.

Use your strategy and set goals as a guide.  It reminds you of your desired outcome.  Learn to fill what’s missing, and enhance what you already shine at.

Conclusion

My post listed skill development examples, as promised in the title.  Most importantly, it focused on vloggers.  Seize opportunities to learn for better results, slaying your goals for success.
