SEO AIO GEO

SEO stands for traditional Search Engine Optimization.  AIO, Google Artificial Intelligence Overview Optimization.  Finally, GEO is Generative Engine Optimization.

When I say SEO, I refer to search engines, especially Google (although it exists for social media too).  AI Overviews appear on top of SERPs when you type a query.  As for Generative AI, I refer to LLMs such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, citing blogs or other sources.  These all potentially drive traffic to your site, especially when properly optimized.

Blogger’s fear of irrelevance

Bloggers often spend months, if not years, working before seeing any results.  I’ve blogged for 8 years already.  I can say how persevering with no results at first is crucial.  It also eventually started paying off, from my hobby to a side hustle.

The fear of irrelevance can happen to anyone.  Decreases in organic visits tend to happen to most websites.  However, with the right updated information, you can learn what works.  You can then put into practice and seize opportunities.

Will AI kill SEO?

If you ask, ‘Will AI kill SEO?’, it’s what most bloggers fear.  However, find ways to seize opportunities instead.  Take advantage of SEO, AIO, and GEO as far as possible.

In my other article, why seo matters, I highlighted how blogs can survive.  Although AI has shaken up the landscape, blogs that persevere can survive.  

Things aren’t the same as before.  For example, organic search traffic has declined.  With AIO, searchers find answers without visiting your blog.  LLMs also give replies. 

SEO optimization gains

SEO is still crucial, although it generally drives less traffic than before.  AIO is often dominated by huge players on the Internet.  However, LLMs can sometimes refer traffic to even smaller blogs.  

Out of SEO, AIO, and GEO, most of my traffic is still driven by SEO (organic search).  AIO tends to be more competitive for small blogs.  However, I sometimes find LLMs as referrals in my stats.  For example, recently, ChatGPT brought my blog some views.

Embrace SEO that works

With blogs, you’re inevitably faced with frequent if not constant changes.  I’ve read how lots of bloggers gave up, seeing a decline in their organic traffic.  However, those who stay can adopt new best practices.

I’ve continued working on my blog, although organic search isn’t the same anymore.  I’ve also further diversified my traffic sources.  To avoid burnout as a solopreneur, I focus more on the platforms that bring the most results for me. 

Based on my platform insights, stats, and feedback, I’ve doubled down on Instagram vlogging.  I started writing on the Medium platform.  X (formerly Twitter) is also key to my content creation.

AIO vs SEO 

SEO is seen as traditional, with the emergence of AIO and GEO.  However, you can’t ignore it.  Its best practices are still beneficial, while staying updated with new changes.

AI Overviews appear when someone types a query on search engines.  Instead of clicking on traditional blue links, most searchers gain replies right there.  This generally reduces the number of clicks to sites.

GEO AIO

GEO relates to LLMs, and optimizing for it is gainful.  Blogs might not show up much on AI Overview results.  However, do optimize with GEO best practices to potentially benefit from citations and visits.

AI Overviews are selective of their sources and tend to link to reputable sources.  This often leaves small blogs behind.  However, following the best practices is still beneficial.  By doing so, you’ll be on the right path, doing the right things, regardless.

  2. An interesting post! I’ve never even considered these things…perhaps because I’ve not tried to monetize my blog. But I will definitely think about these tools when I have a book to sell!
