The importance of service providers

Web host services support your site crucially.  Much of your site performance depends on your choice of web hosting provider.  Migrating to a new provider is possible, however, better select the right one for yourself strategically.

Criteria to consider:

  • Speed
  • Security
  • Uptime
  • Tech support
  • Cost-effectiveness

My current blog uses a managed platform.  WordPress.com leaves me the freedom to focus more on my content creation.  However, when it comes to having control over your blog or website, go for self-hosted WordPress.org instead.

Having started my current blog as a hobby, it was reasonable to use the managed WordPress.com version.  My hobby later turned into a side hustle.  The platform has worked for me, so I’ve stayed with it so far.

I started a second site and then chose self-hosted WordPress.org instead.  There is much more freedom with plugins to add desired features.  When monetizing, you’re also better off with options here.  Find out more about platform options to publish your articles in my other post.

Who is the best web host?

When it comes to the best provider, there’s no single answer.  There is, however, the best choice for you, based on your needs.  Know your requirements, and goals, and have a strategy before choosing your provider.

A small blogger has certain needs.  An advanced blogger has additional requirements.  A startup versus an established business, or a local one versus an international one, all gain from making different choices.

Web hosting cost

I’ll provide web host examples for WordPress, which is mostly used by bloggers.  Other types of sites also use the same providers.  However, bloggers often choose plans that integrate with WordPress.

5 famous providers:

  • BlueHost
  • Hostinger
  • DreamHost
  • HostGator
  • SiteGround

There are various web hosts for WordPress.  My list focuses on 5 and I’ll highlight the general starting price range as an example.  Please note that the renewal prices normally differ and increase.  Find more info on their respective websites, as their pricing and terms can change at any time.

Generally, monthly web hosting prices tend to start at around $2-5 a month.  After the initial period, they increase.

You get better deals with longer-term periods, which is normally the 3-year option.

Monthly plans are better for short-term projects.  If you’re keen on blogging, better go for the long-term options, and seize the best prices.  These will amount to being more affordable monthly when paid for longer on the whole.

DreamHost hosting starts at $ 2.99 a month.

Find your best alternative

What web host to choose?  It all depends on your specific context.  Consider speed, security, uptime guaranteed, tech support, and cost-effectiveness.

Choose a plan that aligns with your blog level reached.  For example, newbies with less content often can go for starter plans.  However, the shared plans often lack certain features.  See what’s included and ask yourself if you can do without these.

There are add-ons at an extra price that you can opt for if preferred.  This makes personalizing your package interesting.  Only add an extra feature or service, if you desire.  This helps to control your overall billing amount.

Aligning with long-term strategy

Are you looking for a web host for life?  Your needs normally evolve as your blog grows.  Newbies and advanced bloggers have different requirements.  For example, starters can use lower storage space than advanced ones.  There are more blogger essentials to learn about in my other article.

Photography blogs require more media storage than article blogs.  The security level might differ at different plans, with the more affordable having fewer features, compared to higher plans.

Staying with the same provider for your (site’s) lifetime isn’t a must.  Many migrate to other web hosts, as their needs evolve.  However, you may choose to remain with the same one, and only upgrade your plan as and when relevant.

With DreamHost, you have the WordPress Starter plan for your new site.  Opt for WordPress Unlimited if you have multiple sites.  The DreamPress plan is WordPress-managed, offering much more.  It even caters to higher traffic needs (eg. 100k monthly visitors).

Conclusion

You’ve seen how much web hosting costs per month in my post.  Find the right blend of features, according to your needs.  Choose your web host meticulously to avoid undesired regretful experiences.

  1. This is truly an interesting post Sharvi. The thought of self hosting never crossed my mind since I did not know anything about it. But the way you simply broke it down makes sense and I’ll do more research on it and will consider it down the road when I feel ready.
