Are you about to choose a gift for someone rather close? Looking for ideas on finding the right present? Read my blog post for tips on choosing the perfect gift…

In this blog post, I’ll share tips that will help you in finding the right gift for a close one. It could be a member of your family, a friend or someone you know rather well and interact with regularly. For the sake of illustration, I’ll name the person you want to find a gift for, ‘Mary’.

Here’s a list of 11 tips:

1. Jot down

Firstly, make a list of different gifts that could be right for Mary. This helps to consider a range of relevant possibilities. In the end, you’ll eliminate those less appealing and pin down the right one!

Things to consider when making your list of possible gifts:

2. Personality

Think about Mary’s personality. Is she outgoing, introverted or an ambivert? What’s her nature like?

3. Interests

Based on your past conversations, what does she like? What could she be looking for? Did she ever tell you anything? Use that as a hint!

4. Tastes

How does she normally dress? What are her favourite colours? Is she very trendy or prefers simplicity?

5. Activities

What are her hobbies? What does she order at the restaurant or café? Is she fitness-conscious?

6. Goals

What are her life goals? Is she keen on self-improvement? Does she have a daily self-care routine? What are her aspirations and ambitions?

7. Wish list

Go on the websites that she often visits, see if she has added a wish list. If so, use it for selection. Give her something that she needs or desires!

8. Social media

See what brands and pages she’s following and interacting with on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or any other platform that she uses. What is she saying about the products? Can you guess what she loves?

9. Ask others

If you need more ideas, ask a common friend. Find someone who knows her as much as you do, or better still, more than you do. Can you find someone who lives in the same house as her or at least meets her often?

10. Ask directly

If you still need reassurance… just go ahead and ask her! This wouldn’t work if you’re planning for a surprise gift. However, if you want to give her precisely what she craves, then consider asking her directly.

11. Choose

At the end of your list of potential gifts, you should narrow down to the most relevant ones (shortlist), and finally choose the best. Consider the budget you set aside for it. If you’re shopping online for a physical product, then you’ll have to wait for the shipping process. On the other hand, digital products are more convenient in terms of delivery and stock availability.

  1. These are very helpful tips for buying a gift. The wrong gift is as bad as the lack of a gift because it shows that we do not know this person or is not important enough for us.

  2. Well, its actually a combination of everything you just said but in the end, if the person is understanding enough.. he/she will appreciate as long as its given free-willingly.

  4. I am not a gifted person. I like spontaneous gifts. As otherwise all this planning and choices puts too much stress on me and is obligating. But it is useful for others who like giving gifts.
