Are values an outdated thing or do you choose to recognize their worth? There’s no real obligation, and some people do embrace having them in life, while others might not think much about the matter. Read my article to see the benefits of embracing strong values.
Disclaimer: My blog is to be used for general information, inspirational, and motivational purposes. I share things that I’ve learnt and experienced. In case of need, do seek help from a professional in the relevant field.
I write much about self-improvement, as it’s my blogging niche. While many of my topics are about learning, life goals, and self-care, I’ll share something a bit different this time. It’s an opportunity for my readers to think about their experiences.
Some examples of having values in life include (but aren’t limited to):
“All life demands struggle. Those who have everything given to them become lazy, selfish, and insensitive to the real values of life. The very striving and hard work that we so constantly try to avoid is the major building block in the person we are today.” – Pope Paul VI
Find 8 benefits of embracing strong values that I live by (and would like to tell my readers about):
1. Your beliefs
Living according to your beliefs and values is key to doing what you trust and truly want. If you try to do things that you don’t genuinely believe in you might be living according to other peoples’ rules and wishes. Making those close to you happy is important. At the same time, if you never live according to your beliefs, you won’t work on realizing your dreams.
2. Being yourself
Being your true self and doing what you believe in, living by your values and character is natural. Everyone has differences and their personality. Couples do have to consider each other’s choices when making decisions. At the same time, having hobbies and time for personal growth is something everyone needs.
Know your priorities and take action on them. Time is a scarce resource and there’s so much to accomplish. Dedicating time to close ones, self-care, learning for professional reasons, and living your life purpose could be on your list of priorities among other things.
4. What’s right
Live according to your morals. Do what you know is right. While there can be much dishonesty and deceit in life, do not lose hope and keep persevering. There will be both, friends and foes.
“Nothing is given to man on earth – struggle is built into the nature of life, and conflict is possible – the hero is the man who lets no obstacle prevent him from pursuing the values he has chosen” – Andrew Bernstein
5. Societal norms
Society has set many rules and norms. While it’s mandatory to respect the law, societal norms on the other hand can be for the better or may instead be seen as undesired. When you’re told that you should do this at an age and then achieve that by the time you’re 40, you can in fact choose your goals.
6. Stand up for yourself
Stand up for yourself, be assertive, use tact, negotiate when needed, all depending on the situation. A few days ago, I had to ask for a refund at the supermarket because an item was invoiced thrice the price! It did waste some of my time, but the supermarket staff had to correct the mistake and refund it.
7. At home
Values are taught at home by parents. Children learn about the basic morals and codes of life at an early age. Later on, they pass them on to their kids. This in turn, helps to shape better human beings and eventually, a better world.
“I have learned so many things from my mother about the right upbringing, the right values, value for money, value for elders, for family members. I think these things only a parent can teach you.” – Karisma Kapoor
8. Independence of choice
Independence of choice can also be a value. Having your life goals based on your life purpose, making calculated decisions, showing your personality are some ways to express it. I chose to move away from the corporate world to explore other forms of work. This isn’t really within the norms in my environment, but I’ve embraced entrepreneurship and working from home although it was a challenging decision.
These are 8 reasons and benefits of adopting strong values, but they aren’t the only ones. I’ve focused on them as they mean much to me and can be of help to my readers.
Having values is a blessing as it guides you towards the right things in life. Know your key principles and ethics for the better. If you enjoyed my article, please comment and share it. Thank you!!
